Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

Why did it take me so long to actually get to read this book? My Second Graders are knee deep in the Caldecott Challenge right now (more on that here: http://www.mssmithreads.com/2017/01/the-caldecott-challenge.html ) and I recently sat down to share with them Mac Barnett's Extra Yarn. Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen are my favorite author and illustrator team, and I even met Mac and got a copy signed, but only JUST read it.

In this quirky and fun read, a young girl comes across a box of yarn that seems just about bottomless. She knits sweaters for anything and everything (including some of Jon Klassen's animal friends that show up in some of his later books). In a twist, an archduke with bad intentions comes and steals the yarn box away. Will it produce yarn for him? Will it ever run out? Will the little girl get her yarn back? Read the book to find out.

What I love about this book is the final few pages, where in typical Jon Klassen style, the words drop away and several illustrations are left to tell the story. Also, I love the random quirkiness that some of the side characters offer. For example, the odd man that declines any sort of sweater because he likes to stand around nearly bare in the snow....he gets a hat instead.
